Do you think there is nothing more to Disney than just the four theme parks? Think again! The Walt Disney World Resort is home to countless activities, from recreation to shopping to all the nightlife you can handle. If you are planning a trip to the Walt Disney World Resort in the future, this article is especially for you! Read on to discover just how much more there is to Disney – beyond the parks!
One of the best ways to discover everything that Disney has to offer is to stay at one of their on-property resorts. These hotels are more than just places to stay – many of them have children’s clubs, while some have on-site spas ands fitness clubs (most notably Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa and Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa) and elegant restaurants all right within reach. In addition, every guest on Disney property receives perks that are only reserved for those staying with them, such as free transportation to and from the Orlando International Airport and on property, Extra Magic Hours in the parks – and more! And, each resort also has several pools for guests to enjoy as well, as each is themed to the specific resort and its surroundings. In other words, you may not need to venture very far at all for some top-notch fun on your Disney vacation if you are staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel!
Once you do venture past your accommodations, your next stop should be at Downtown Disney. This shopping and entertainment Mecca is home to Pleasure Island, Downtown Disney Marketplace and Downtown Disney West Side. Pleasure Island is Disney’s nightlife headquarters, with a plethora of clubs and bars that play all different kinds of music to suit anyone’s fancy. Downtown Disney Marketplace is the No. 1 spot in all of Disney to find any Disney merchandise you have been looking for, especially at the World of Disney, one of the largest (and busiest) Disney stores in the entire world! Finally, Downtown Disney West Side is home to a whole new entertainment world. Here, you will find several moderate to upscale restaurants in addition to the House of Blues, DisneyQuest (Disney’s indoor virtual theme park) and Cirque du Soleil’s La Nouba.
Located just across from the Downtown Disney sector is Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park, one of two located on property. Typhoon Lagoon is a tropical oasis with one of the world’s largest wave polls that cranks up the action with waves that even surfers can (and do) enjoy! Just down the street from Disney’s Hollywood Studios is Disney’s second water park, Blizzard Beach. As the name suggests, this water park is themed in a winter-like setting, with “snow” everywhere after legend has it that a freak blizzard hit Central Florida. With all of the snow now melting, the result is some of the best water rides and slides in the country! If you do visit this park, be sure to “drop” on by Summit Plummet, a 12-story body slide that is the longest in the world. But whatever you do, plan on getting to these water parks early, especially in the summer months, because they have a small capacity which they usually reach just a couple hours after the gates open in the morning!
Looking for more to do at Disney? If none of the above suits your fancy, how about trying your hand at golf? Disney has five championship golf courses located right on property, and if you aren’t brave enough to try one of those, they have two miniature golf courses as well! Disney also offers a wide array of recreation activities, from boat rentals on their many lakes and lagoons to water skiing, parasailing and fishing excursions. If you want to stay in shape on your vacation, you can take to one of Disney’s fitness clubs or simply run along one of Disney’s running/jogging trails. Or, for those just wanting to watch sports, check out Disney’s Wide World of Sports, which is home to everything from amateur to professional sports year-round, including the Atlanta Braves Spring Training and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp in late summer. Finally, if you are looking for some more high-action fun, head on over to the Richard Petty Driving Experience, where you can ride along – or even drive yourself – in one of the professional stock cars that the pros use!
While all of the above activities could keep you occupied for days and weeks on end at Disney, you don’t want to forget the No. 1 reason why you came on vacation – for the Mouse himself and all of the endless fun that the theme parks offer!
